Quite a few of my students over the years, and several of my colleagues, told me that I'd make a great math teacher. Honestly, I couldn't imagine doing anything else. I have a blast working with teenagers--teaching high school students simply doesn't feel like "work" to me. The fact is that I find teaching to be a very rewarding experience. Most, if not all, kids struggle at some point in their education. They need teachers who will be supportive and patient with them as they learn.
I first got involved in education when I became a math tutor. I started tutoring college students at the PLACe (Personal Learning Assistance Center) at Miramar College in San Diego and quickly found that I love helping people understand math. Later I worked mostly with middle and high school students at Huntington Learning Center in Temecula. As an undergraduate at California State University, San Marcos, I acquired my first experience in the classroom working as a learning assistant in several calculus courses. Afterwards I began tutoring at Temecula Valley High School in the AVID program. Having worked with so many amazing students and educators at TVHS, I left only because I decided that it was time to pursue a Single Subject Teaching Credential.
Understanding how you learn and what your strengths are can help you to become more successful in your education. By identifying those strengths, you can determine which study skills and methods of teaching work best for you. Of the eight different intelligences proposed by Howard Gardner, I am strongest in the logical/mathematical intelligence. However, I realize that most of my students will probably be strongest in a different intelligence. I will work to develop lessons that utilize my students' learning intelligences in order to help them achieve more.
